Description
Robert Bateman’s Totem Spirits – Spotted Owl GOLD Pendant – 2 1/4” X 1 1/2” – 18 Karat Gold Pendant – Edition of 50 – Made in 1990
“I wanted a stylized look – something new and fresh and creative – for the design of my spotted owl pendant. That is why I chose the style of abstract design that is traditional in the art of North America’s west coast native tribes, particularly that of the Haida Indians of British Columbia. The art of the Haida is superior by any standards. I have admired and studied their work for years. The Haida’s use of constantly swelling and shrinking curves and interlocking straight lines gives dynamics to the abstract quality of their art.
The spotted owl has become a symbol for those of us who wish to preserve some remnants of old growth forests, now threatened by the clearcutting practices of the logging industry. I see the spotted owl as a symbol of our endangered wilderness, as the protector of the forests and the rivers and all the animals who live in its domain, like the eagle, the frog and the salmon I have included in the pendant. The spotted owl cannot survive without large tracts of this glorious ecosystem of old-growth forests. It is a pit that the battle lines are drawn with the spotted owl on one side and the forest jobs on the other. We need to change the whole system if we are to have both jobs and spotted owls for the future.” – Robert Bateman

He has made such a massive contribution to the art world and the natural world as an artist and educator of the earth’s most important resources.
Nature as a subject is becoming more and more popular as our environment is in peril. What better subject is there than the beautiful creatures we share this world with? Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once.
Bateman’s eye for composition is unparalleled. Each painting is a composed like a symphony, leading the eye to wander. From the backyards of North America to the sprawling plains of Africa. Robert Bateman captures nature the way it should be enjoyed. Above all he is a champion of wildlife. For this reason he has become a household name for art collectors.
