“Once again the Calgary Zoo afforded the idea for this painting. There are far more Siberian tigers in zoos in the world than there are in the wild. Tiger populations in the wild are said to be between 400-500. There are estimated to be several thousands in captivity, some of which are in breeding programs.
It was wintertime with that beautiful low angle sunlight. As is my usual practice, I combined a number of photos of tigers and landscape to make this composition; the grasses came from a meadow near the zoo on that same day. I had just read John Vaillant’s wonderful book, The Tiger, the true story of a man-eating tiger in Siberia in the 1990s so I knew that their habitat included open glades and meadows, not just deep dark taiga forest. I imagined the mother and cub had just emerged from cover and paused in the grasses to scan the open area for opportunities to hunt. Of course, the magic for me was to create the glow of light illuminating their spectacular patterns of fur.”
